Firstly I went for lunch with James on a baking hot day. We both opted for "formules" which are a main, plus cake, plus a coffee; I went for a mozzarella and tomato salad with olive tapenade, and James chose the salmon, mustard and courgette quiche.
I thought my meal was beautifully presented, and the mozzarella was delicious, but after a while it did become a bit overly creamy so I couldn't finish it. James loved his quiche (even though it had his least favourite thing (vegetables) in it!).
I also got a smoothie (said in French lik "smooozzzeeee" which I never fail to find amusing!) which is just an amazing tall glass of blended frozen raspberries, strawberries and some fresh banana. It almost makes me feel okay about the calories I'd otherwise been consuming during the holiday!
After this it was time for the main attraction: the cake. I was extremely pleased to note that Flower's had not changed their menu in the slightest (it would be the stuff of living nighmares for me if my favourite had been taken off the menu). So I went for my usual: gateau chocolat caramel au lait.
This photo isn't as good as it was on my phone, but just look at the next one, from my third visit of the holiday with Tiffany, Rebecca, Carolyn and Fiona:
A lovely melty gooey one! |
They put the cake in the microwave for a little bit before they bring it out (hence the state of the piece in the final photo!) so the caramel is warm and goeey and it is just the most delicious thing you will ever taste! I'm normally not a big cake person (I'd always choose starter over pudding in a restaurant (if someone was being really mean and saying I couldn't have both)) but I make an exception for this cake. It is just perfection! Something which seems to always happen with English chocolate cakes is that they are dry and nasty, but in France they are always so moist and soft and delicious.
On the same trip, Tiffany went for a red fruit crumble, which I tried, and which was also very good with a very tasty crumble, and the fruit was not overly sweet which is always a positive.
Fiona chose the white chocolate cake
I also had my usual "smooozzzeeee"
Another thing that absolutely HAS to be mentioned is Flower's legendary hot chocolate. I am not generally a fan of any hot drink, and hot chocolate is no exception. It partly has to do with the fact that when I was younger, I imagined hot chocolate to just be melted chocolate, only to lose my hopes when seeing the milky, thin disappointment that hot chocolate usually is, even in places claiming to do it really well. But at Flower's, you can choose to have your hot chocolate thick. And not only is it thick, it is thick enough that you have to spoon it up rather than drinking it. It is basically chocolate fondue in a glass and it is absolutely amazing.
Sadly this picture probably doesn't showcase quite how thick it is, but just believe me! You can also choose to add banana, cinnamon, vanilla and all sorts of other flavours to it, but I've always thought it doesn't need anything else. It is just amazing! (Also for any weird people, you can choose to have it thin, but why would you when you could have chocolate cake, AND chocolate fondue in a glass?!).
P.S. Here is a picture of me about to have my very first piece of cake in Flower's, along with a thick hot chocolate. One of the happiest days of my life?!
