Café Yolk, Reading

Posted on 04:47 by suresh kumar
I have been waiting to post about Café Yolk for so long! I've been twice now but wanted to go for lunch so I could have a burger and blog about all my visits in one; however, due to a recent planned visit falling through, I'll blog about my breakfasts now and save the burger one for another post, another day!

The first I heard about Café Yolk was when my dad spotted it on his way to the doctor's while I was still at uni in York...as I frequently bemoan the lack of independent restaurants in Reading he was quick to tell me about it, and it therefore became somewhere I HAD to visit when I was back from York, particularly since it was rated number 1 on tripadvisor at the time!

My first visit with James!
The main focus of its menu is breakfast, but they also have some toasties and a range of burgers. There isn't a website sadly but here's two pictures of the menu for your viewing pleasure!

It's located in a studenty area not in the centre of town, which is quite nice as it still feels like a bit of a secret, despite the fact that it's clearly extremely popular! It's about 25 minutes walk from my house which is also nice as I feel like I can work my breakfast off before getting there!

So, after waiting months to go, my first visit was a few weekends ago with James. We arrived to an almost full restaurant, with only one table left outside, so quickly grabbed that before going inside to look at the menu.

I very quickly decided to go for the wild berry smoothie and the canadian breakfast and, as I felt like a challenge, shared cheesy chips with James. James got the Yolk breakfast with tea and orange juice.

The Canadian breakfast was ABSOLUTELY HUGE! 2 pancakes, maple syrup, 2 rashers of bacon, 2 sausages, 2 fried eggs, baked beans, mushroom, tomato and sauté potatoes! It was amazing - the pancakes were soft and fluffy and so delicious paired with the syrup and bacon. I also loved the potatoes - crispy and with some kind of yummy spice on them which I couldn't quite work out but was delicious all the same. The sausages were slightly too herby for me but that's only because I'm a baby and prefer plain Richmond over anything more sophisticated! I don't think I could complain about anything in the whole meal properly though, it was just great. The smoothie was really thick and fruity too, and made me feel slightly less unhealthy.

James' breakfast was marginally smaller but still very generous - toast, beans, mushroom, tomato, 2 fried eggs, 2 sausages, 2 rashers of bacon and sauté potatoes, all for a very reasonable £7.95

He loved it! We also had the cheesy chips...

...which were really good, but could have done with some more cheese in my opinion. Only a small gripe though, as when you did get cheese it was a very nice flavoursome one, so you could taste it quite strongly.

Having been on this visit, I told my friend Georgina about it, and she thought it sounded so good that we arranged a trip together one morning before I started work!

This time I chose the omelette with cheese, chorizo and salsa (no sour cream for me as I don't like it at all!)

It comes with a side of toast and the delicious sauté potatoes. It was so good - the chorizo was crispy and flavoursome and the cheese was very tasty as well, and the salsa complemented it really well.

Georgina went for the eggs benedict

She really enjoyed it and found it very filling - but not so filling that we couldn't have something sweet....Georgina chose a malteaser milkshake and I had french toast with maple syrup and strawberries.

The milkshake was thick and creamy and you could really taste the malteasers...and the French toast was absolutely amazing! I think it might have been made with really thick sliced tiger bread , and it was so soft! It soaked up the maple syrup so that every bite oozed with it, and the strawberries provided a nice sharp contrast to the sweetness.

As you can probably tell, I absolutely love Café Yolk and I am so glad Reading has somewhere a bit different to all the usual chains, and that it is so successful! Could this be Reading's answer to the Breakfast Club?! I definitely think so, and will be returning lots more over the next few months I hope.
