The Bull, Theale

Posted on 10:05 by suresh kumar
Pubs are one of my favourite things about England - they were definitely one of the things I missed the most when I was on my year abroad in France (along with queues, baked beans and toasters) - as I absolutely love pub food. When people ask me what my favourite type of food is, (good) pub food always comes near the top, so I was really pleased when Kirsty (a friend from work) suggested we go to The Bull for lunch on our day off.

The first good thing about The Bull is that it had that really familiar, good old pub smell. It's just so comforting! It's a really cosy pub (I bet it will look lovely at Christmas) and we got nice comfy seats in the corner.

Having had a not too great experience with a burger on Sunday (blog post to follow..) I deliberated a lot over whether to order the burger here or not; in the end, I decided to, but asked if I could have it medium rare even though some pubs have a problem with that request. At first the waitress said I would be able to, but later came over with the disappointing news that I couldn't...I wasn't altogether surprised but decided to cut my losses and go for the veg lasagne with garlic bread! Kirsty stuck with the burger, and we also had starters - pan fried chorizo for me, and a halloumi and veg stack for Kirsty.

You can't really go wrong with chorizo in my opinion, and this one was no exception; well cooked with a spicy kick, and paired with the bread it was delicious! Kirsty's halloumi and veg stack looked great too.

I make what I like to think is a good veg lasagne, so I am always interested to see what I think of restaurants' ones - this one was great! Really cheesy which is always excellent, with nice big chunks of different veg, and the garlic bread was so good dipped in the sauce!

Although it looked like they were generous with the cheese on Kirsty's burger, and mushroom and bacon were good extra topping choices, she said that I made the right decision in not getting it - apparently it had changed since last time and was no longer as tasty! Sad but also, as Kirsty said, next time she comes she can actually try something different on the menu without fear that she's missing out by not getting the burger!

All in all a really good pub which I would go back to - but if you like your burgers anything under well done then perhaps avoid the one here.
