Handmade Burger Co, Reading

Posted on 12:41 by suresh kumar
Yesterday was an event I had been looking forward to for months....HUNGER GAMES DOUBLE BILL DAY! Some of my school friends and I had booked tickets to see the first film at 9pm on Wednesday night, followed by Catching Fire straight afterwards at midnight - a Hunger Games extravaganza!

Very exciting!!
Obviously we needed to prepare ourselves and fill our stomachs before nearly 6 hours of watching other people be hungry, so Felicity and I headed to the Handmade Burger Co. Sadly the others couldn't come due to work, but Georgina's Burger King and £10 worth of cinema snacks probably made up for it....

It was my first time at Handmade Burger Co - I'd always meant to try it since it arrived on the Riverside, but due to the opening of Five Guys (I don't care what other reviews say, I love it!!) I kept going elsewhere! However, Felicity has a wheat intolerance and Handmade Burger Co do a good allergy menu, and so it seemed like the perfect time to try it. Also vouchercloud were doing an offer where if you buy one burger, the second is a pound! Bargain!

The menu is really extensive with practically every topping combo you could dream of, and as well as beef burgers you can get chicken, or lamb, and they have a good range of veggie options too. They also do sliders and stuffed burgers!

In the end I went for the "hot chilli" burger which has a red and green chilli salsa and jalapeños, plus the usual tomatoes etc. I also added mature cheddar - it's not a burger if it doesn't have cheese!! You can switch the usual bun for a brioche bun, so of course I went for that option.

At first I was a bit worried due to the lack of pink centre, but actually I thought the burger was really really good! Nice and juicy, with a generous amount of toppings, but still manageable to eat by hand! The jalapeños and salsa added a kick and the patty was well seasoned. The brioche bun was squashy and absorbed some of the burger/jalapeño juiciness nicely!

Felicity went for a bunless beef burger with avocado, bacon and mature cheddar, and had a side of coleslaw..

..which looked far more interesting on the plate than my burger on its own! But hopefully didn't taste any better, I couldn't deal with the post-meal food envy/regret if it did!

We also shared a side of peri peri chips (shocking for me to share, I know, but they were huge portions and I had been forewarned by two different people that a portion to myself might be too much!). They were really nice soft and fat chips, and the spice added great flavour without having the horrible sandy texture of nandos peri peri spice.

The only negative I could find for the meal was that I didn't think the garlic mayo was garlicky enough - but maybe they're trying to be kind to people on dates etc...I'll definitely come back here after a few more Five Guys fixes! (Oh, and for the record - I probably could have eaten a whole portion of chips and the burger, but it might have made me cross the threshold from comfortably full to uncomfortably full!)

AND in case anyone is interested, I loved Catching Fire - completely gripping from beginning to end and I'd watch it again today!
